Marihuana Grows
Thunder BayCrime Stoppers and the Tri-Force Drug Unit want to make CFNO listeners aware of an ever increasing drug problem in the Thunder Bay District.
There is an alarming increase in the amount and size of marihuana grow operations in Northwestern Ontario. In 2005 alone, the Tri-Force Drug Unit seized over 17,000 marihuana plants. Criminal groups are becoming more organized and are setting up large scale operations throughout the area. The outdoor growing season for marihuana is generally between May and October.
Grow-ops can be located in hidden areas on private property or in remote areas that are hard to access. For best results planting usually occurs on the south sides of fields and near a readily available source of water such as along a creek or small lake. Often, new trails in the bush will be formed and there may be some unexplainable traffic in accessing a given area. Recently purchased pieces of property that appear to be abandoned or are frequented at irregular intervals and at odd hours may be an indication of a potential marihuana grow.
Mischief
Schreiber
Officers with the Schreiber Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police could use your help in identifying the persons responsible for an incredible act of mischief that resulted in tens of thousands of dollars in damage to a home on Columbia St. in Schreiber.
This incident occurred sometime between Thursday, the 13th of April and Monday, the 17th of April. A home heating fuel line leading from an external storage tank to the interior of the residence was deliberately cut and this allowed approximately 800 to 850 liters of fuel to leak into the basement of the home and into the sewer drain and eventually into the sewage treatment plant itself. This mischief was only detected after an unusually high amount of fuel was required to fill the tank on Monday, the 17th and the tank and line itself was inspected the following day. The entire basement was covered in fuel oil. In addition to this damage a camper trailer on the property was randomly spray painted with red paint and its tires slashed.
This is a very active police investigation as clean up damage estimates continue to climb. This horrible act of mischief not only affected the occupants of this particular residence but others in the community by way of fuel contamination to the sewage treatment plant.
This is a time for the Community to act. If you have any information on this crime…do the right thing and call Crime Stoppers.
