On Thursday February 28, 2008 @9pm Thunder Bay Fire Department responded to an alarm from an apartment building in the Academy Area.  Upon arrival they found a first floor apartment engulfed in flames.  The fire was extinguished and the following investigation deemed the fire to be suspicious in nature, and deemed to be arson.

The occupant was not home at the time and it is believed that access was gained from the ground floor patio door.  These would be thieves then set the fire for no apparent reason.

It is most fortunate that there were no serious injuries occurring, but the occupants did have to endure the cold weather conditions until it was deemed safe to re-enter their apartments.  The fire caused major damage to the unit and there was some smoke and water damage to the rest of the building.

Please, if you have any information on this arson, do the right thing and call Crime Stoppers @ 1-800-222-8477.

Provincial Police at Thunder Bay Detachment continue to investigate the theft of a large quantity of fuel from an area work site.

Also stolen in the theft was a tool box that had been mounted in the box of a pickup truck.

Access to the fuel was gained by prying open a locked cover on a power panel for a fuel storage tank.  Police suspect that a large commercial vehicle with large operational fuel tanks or one with the storage capacity to carry this amount of fuel was used in this theft.

If you have any information on this or any other crime…contact Crime Stoppers!

Illegal Handguns

Gun crime is on the increase in many Canadian cities and this is probably no different for the City and District of Thunder Bay.

Of these guns many are handguns that are often used in homicides, assaults, and armed robberies. Most are illegally obtained through theft and smuggling.

There’s no doubt that handguns are highly sought after and are in deed a commodity for many criminal organizations. Street prices can be as little as a few hundred dollars.

Let’s do our part to keep illegal guns off of our streets. If you have any information on persons dealing or in the possession of illegal handguns…call Crime Stoppers! We’ll pay cash rewards for any illegal or stolen handgun recovered by police.

False Fire Alarms

Crime Stoppers is looking for information on persons responsible for false fire alarms.

Not only is pulling a fire alarm a dumb idea it is a criminal offence.  By pulling the fire alarm you are not only diverting resources by having them respond, someone could get injured by the mere act of responding.  Remember only you know the alarm is false, the emergency units that are responding believing the call is real and are responding accordingly.

Remember even though it is a false alarm, the crews on scene must now ensure that there is nothing wrong.  The building has to be searched and the alarm system has to be checked and then reset.  This takes time and if a real emergency occurs now, this crew will not be able to attend until the false alarm is cleared!

If you know someone that likes to pull fire alarms, call Crime Stoppers!

Door to Door Canvassing

This week Crime Stoppers would like to take this opportunity ensure that you are not the victim of someone fraudulently canvassing for a local charity.

Door to door canvassing is conducted by a number of local charities to raise not only funds for the program but awareness as well.

These volunteers attend a number of workshops and interviews prior to being authorized to canvass for funds.  It is these workshops and interviews that will “weed” out the people who have other motives that are not all that altruistic in nature.

The volunteer is then issued their canvass kit and assigned a specific area to cover.  These kits vary from organization but in general will include: an id tag, pamphlets, an official receipt book, and envelops that can be mailed in, if you do not feel comfortable giving a donation at your door.

Please remember, there is nothing wrong in giving a donation to a canvasser and supporting a worthy cause.  But if your donation is given to an imposter does that really help the program?

The following are a few of the things to look out for:  is the person canvassing at a reasonable time?  Do they have an official receipt book? Do they have the mail in envelops?  Are they only asking for cash donations only?  Are they asking the cheque be made payable to something other then the charity?

If you have any questions or concerns, ask the canvasser for clarification and if that does clear up your concerns contact the organization the person is representing and explain your concerns.  If there is no one at the organization when you call and you feel the person is not legitimate then please contact your local police to investigate.

Mischief

Crime Stoppers is looking for your help to identify the person(s) responsible for the theft or remove of street signs.

Street signs have long been a target of theft or mischief by people who have little respect for public property.  These people believe the sign would look better on their bedroom wall or knocked down rather then in its assigned location.

Crime Stoppers is asking these people to think of the consequences should a sign be removed or knocked over.  A driver unfamiliar with the area could drive through an intersection, if a stop sigh was tampered with.  Someone suffering from heart failure could die if a street sign was knocked down.  These are just a couple of the consequences if you remove or knock down the signs.

Just remember, taking the sign is theft, having the sign, is possession of stolen property (the signs are not thrown out or given away) or mischief if the sign is bent over or pulled out.  You could be charge criminally and be held accountable civilly for these acts.

Remember these signs are there for a specific purpose and are not to be tampered with.  Doing so could put someone’s life in jeopardy.

If you know of anyone stealing these signs, call Crime Stoppers!

Counterfeit Money

Crime Stoppers would like to caution the public and particularly those from the business community where money is transacted on a daily basis about the amount of counterfeit money being circulated.

A series of 20 dollar notes have been found circulating in the city.  At first look these notes appear to be real.  But of course once under close scrutiny these notes are found to be counterfeit

Crime Stoppers encourages all retailers and the public to visit the Bank of Canada’s web site to find out more on the security features on Canadian Bank notes.  Go to www.bankofcanada.ca/en/banknotes and check out the security features found on your money.

If you find yourself in possession of one of these counterfeit bills, please call the non emergency line to the local police.  They will instruct you on what to do.  Crime Stoppers has training handbooks available to local merchants that wish to train their staff in identifying counterfeit money.  These training handbooks are free and are being provided by the Bank of Canada.  Contact the Crime Stoppers office to get your training handbook.

With the advancement of copiers and computer programs the passing of counterfeit money appears to be an increasing problem for police.

If you have any information on persons printing and/or passing counterfeit money…call Crime Stoppers!

Investigation showed that the lock was removed from the shed and the ATV was pulled out.  Tracks revealed the ATV was moved to the neighbour’s yard and it appears the thief was able to start the ATV.  Due to lack of snow and dry pavement, there were no tracks.  It is most likely the ATV was loaded onto a truck that was waiting on Walkover Street.

Targeted was Allan’s Gravel Pit on Hwy. # 590 in Marks Twp., a rural area just west of the City.

The first incident occurred sometime between Tuesday, the 9th of October and Tuesday, the 16th of October when two 19.5 x 25 inch front end loader rims, approximately 50 truck rims, and approximately one tonne of assorted scrap steel was stolen.

Police believe that all of these items were stolen for resale as scrap metal and that access to the pit by some type of large truck was gained by using bush roads off of Mayo Road.

Arson - Hazelwood Drive

Provincial Police at Thunder Bay Detachment continue to investigate an act of arson in which two storage sheds and a vehicle were completely destroyed by fire.

Physical evidence located at the scene leaves no doubt that this fire was a deliberate criminal act of arson.  This is not the first report of fire in the area or on this property and police continue to investigate several other incidents going back to the spring of last year including the arson of the actual residence on Monday, the 10th of July in 2006.

On Tuesday September 18 @ 3:20 pm police responded to a 911 call indicating a convenience store had just been robbed at knife point.

Police were told that an armed male had just left the store on foot and was headed towards McKenzie Street.  The area was searched but the robber was not located.

Investigation revealed that the male entered the store, produced a knife and demanded money from the till.  What separates this robbery from other robberies was the fact it was committed in the middle of the afternoon and there were a number of customers in the store at the time of the robbery.  It appears that the robber has little fear of being caught.

Surveillance video shows the robber as male, approximately 5’5” – 5’8” in height, about 19-23 yrs of age, lighter skin colour and last seen wearing a sweatshirt with a silver cross and wings on the front.

This male was described as 6’2” tall thin build.  He was last seen wearing a Toronto Blue Jays Team jacket.  Witness stated that this male was seen in company of the person responsible for the robbery.  It is unknown if this second male was part of the robbery, but police would very much like to talk to this person.

Mischief- Graffiti - Leland,Walsh,Thistle

Crime Stoppers is seeking the public’s help in identifying those responsible for what can only be described as a tasteless act of mischief.

On Saturday September 1 the residents in the Walsh/Leland/Thistle area awoke to find that overnight their houses, sheds, and fences had been spray painted by unknown persons.   What was disturbing to the residents was the fact that the graffiti spray painted was of Neo Nazi symbols and White Supremacy slogans.

Upsetting is the fact that this type of incident does not accurately reflect the attitudes and values of these residents.  This type of incident also reflects badly on the City as a whole.

Police, through forensic evidence collection, will be looking at this incident as a possible promotion of hate propaganda, which is an offense under the Criminal Code.

Theft of copper wire between Aug 11-Aug 15 ,2007

The theft of precious metals and in particular copper wire continues to be a major problem for police not only in and around Thunder Bay but throughout the Province.

Despite preventative and investigative efforts by police to combat this particular type of crime there has been a marked increase in thefts with railway lines and hydro stations being consistently targeted.

Two of the most recent local incidents occurred sometime between Saturday the 11th of August and Wednesday the 15th of August when a total of 51 lengths of copper wire were removed from poles along the Canadian Pacific Railway line in Shuniah Twp.  This is an area just east of the City that can be accessed by Hwy. # 11/17 as well as a gravel road running north from the highway to Hanson’s Pit.  Nine lengths of wire were removed at the railway overpass with the highway.  Another 42 lengths were removed at a point just a bit further east at mileage 115.8 of the railway.

The amount of wire stolen is substantial and it would have taken quite sometime to cut and remove it from the poles.  The use of some sort of a truck would certainly have been required.

To help combat any theft of copper wire Thunder Bay District Crime Stoppers is significantly increasing its reward payments up to a maximum of $2,000.00 for information on any of these crimes.  If you have any information that can help police identify those responsible or recover any copper wire …call Crime Stoppers!

Police responded to a call of a break and entry to an office on the main floor at St. Joseph’s.  It appears that a window was smashed out and the suspect entered the office and removed a quantity of computer equipment from the office.  The suspect removed two pillow cases from the pillows located on one of the physiotherapy tables. The items were placed in these cases and carried out of the building.

Mischief with Firearms

January 29, 2007

Through Crime Stoppers the Ontario Provincial Police at Thunder Bay Detachment could use your help in identifying the persons responsible for an incredibly stupid and senseless act of mischief.

On Friday, the 8th of December damage to seven overhead cables on what is called the Hazelwood Tower was discovered by maintenance crews with Bell Mobility.  This tower is located at the Junction of Hazelwood Drive and Hwy. # 589 in Gorham Township.

From evidence gathered at the scene it would appear gun shots were fired upwards from directly beneath the cables striking them and leaving large holes.  Several of the antennas on the tower were also shot at.  Damage was extensive and required work crews to go out in severe weather to make repairs.

For most people it would seem using firearms to cause damage to overhead wires, roadway signs, or other convenient non-targets is extremely dangerous.  Unfortunately there are a few that think otherwise.

Any mischief using a firearm is a serious crime.  Let’s do the right thing and identify those responsible.  Remain anonymous and call Crime Stoppers!
